Cruise ships docked in Gibraltar are being alerted to the risks of a British nuclear submarine, prompting Spanish environmentalists to warn passengers that they’re at risk by being close to the Royal Navy’s nuclear-powered vessel.
The HMS Astute arrived in Gibraltar final week, docking on the navy port within admiralty waters to the south of Gibraltar Harbour.
Spanish environmentalists have long protested in opposition to British and US nuclear submarines visiting Gibraltar, studies Daily Express UK.Â
Ecologists in Action, a group primarily based in Spain, launched a assertion, saying the port “puts the rock’s tourism sector at risk” and that “Gibraltar must decide whether it wants a military port or a tourist port, the UK nuclear-powered submarine HMS Astute docking in Gibraltar’s military port on March 15 2025 puts the rock’s tourism sector at risk.”
Ecologists in Action mentioned: “We continue to protest against the arrival of these submarines that sail with a nuclear reactor and put the Strait of Gibraltar and those who live in this area at risk.”
With its prime positioning, Gibraltar’s waters function an intersection for maritime visitors transitioning between the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes.
Given its geographic benefit, Gibraltar’s port is an important resupply location for the myriad of ships, with an estimated 60,000 vessels navigating by its waters yearly.
