Cruise captain dies on board after “sudden medical emergency” after 30 – Cruises – Travel


A captain on Princess Cruises died instantly during a voyage round Asia.

Capt. Michele Bartolomei, 52, suffered a “sudden medical emergency,” in line with USAToday. He had a profession at sea for more than 30 years, becoming a member of Princess Cruises in 1995.

Princess Cruises has had a tough few months, together with having to cancel a number of journeys to help the company’s “broader global fleet deployment strategy.” The cruise line additionally confronted a huge norovirus outbreak and suffered a main tragedy over the Christmas vacation when a lady died after attempting to leap off a ship.

Capt. Salvatore Macera instantly took over the helm after Bartolomei’s passing, and Capt. Renzo Lembo joined on May 20 to complete the journey.

After the information of Bartolomei, the company posted a assertion on Facebook: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, a beloved member of the Princess Cruises family whose career at sea spanned more than 30 years. Since joining Princess in 1995, he made a lasting impact on our fleet and our guests.

“From new ship deliveries to world cruises, Captain Bartolomei’s leadership, professionalism, and deep love for the ocean inspired all who had the privilege of sailing with him.

“Our hearts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time, and we extend our deepest condolences to them. We also stand in support of the Diamond Princess crew and all team members across our fleet mourning this loss.”

One consumer wrote: “We were lucky enough to have Captain Bartolomei for our Christmas/New Years cruise around New Zealand this past year. We were so impressed with him…he was very “present”, was concerned in so many actions together with spending an hour or so singing Christmas carols with different crew and passengers within the atrium. He was pleasant, personable and caring. He shall be missed.”

Another stated: “A privilege to sail with you and Salvatore on Grand Princess last year. You, Salvatore and the team are all very friendly and accommodated to all the passengers on board. Our condolences to your family, Captain Michele. RIP in heaven of the sea.”

A 3rd penned: “We had just got off the most amazing cruise on the Diamond Princess, having only spoken to Captain Bartolomei last Wednesday. Our condolences to his family and all the crew aboard Diamond Princess. It will be extremely hard for them to keep smiling. Our hearts are with you ladies and gentlemen.”
